We have undertaken small but significant research projects to explore the viability of production of low volume high value organic produce like asparagus, brussels sprout, bamboo shoots, coloured bell peppers, varieties of mushrooms etc.
A part of our efforts are also to experiment with exotic fruits like Kiwi that may be profitably grown in this region as well as possibility of cultivation of wild berries like Hisalu, Kaphal, Kilmora.
There are many famous agricultural produce greatly valued traditionally in the region like rajma from Harsil and Munsyari, we are experimenting whether some of these crops can be grown without loss of quality in other locations with similar micro-climatic conditions in areas under our project sites.
Another such project is involved with innovative produce from traditional ingredients/crops like madua (small black millet) cookies, haldi capsules, tofu from soya bean.
Floriculture is another area of research and we are trying to cultivate some varieties of orchids in our project area.
Fast growing fruit bearing trees is another area of focus and research. Apiary and other such initiatives that would help supplement the income of the villagers are underway.
Tea as a cash crop was planted by the British in the region. The plantations are in a state of neglect and decline for the past few decades. Erstwhile plantation area has been taken over by often illegal construction, leaving little scope for their development. We have identified different climatic zones where tea plantations can be initiated and our grass root partners have shown infectious enthusiasm about it.
Many of the ingredients of tonics like chavanprash are sourced from these hills, unfortunately reckless commercial exploitation has brought many species to the verge of extinction. Also ignorance has resulted only in lack of quality control and loss of adequate remuneration to cultivators/harvesters. One of our research endeavor is to impart this traditional knowledge about amla, hereda, brahmini, white moosli, etc. to the locals enabling them to enhance their income.
